'You gotta be kidding me!' I say this because, there seems to be no limit to how inexpensive smartphones can get these days. They are not particularly 'cheap', as they come packed with state of the art technologies inside. Beating Kogan Arora at its game, is the new Karbonn S1 Titanium. The mouthful name aside, it brings a quad-core Qualcomm 1.2GHz processor in a nicely styled package for a jaw-dropping price of 150 Euros. That does not break the 150$ price of Kogan Arora, but beats it with a faster processor. This phone is available for pre-order in India. You may find more details at their website - http://www.karbonnmobiles.com/karbonn-S1Titanium-proid-118.html

Having a faster processor may not hurt battery life so much. The newer processors are made to consume about the same amount of energy as their predecessors. Nokia Lumia 510 suffers from being a Windows phone whose ecosystem cannot compete with that of Android.

Nokia 510 is a budget device with budget features whereas the above one is a budget device with better than budget features

Looks like "Law of Diminishing Returns" has kicked in and companies can no longer differentiate with higher specs (Read 1080p screens, 2 GHz Quad Core Processors, 2 GB Ram, etc.) which do not add much to end user experience. Finally it will boil down to competing on price for similarly specced devices and consumers shall rejoice :-)

Thanks to Google, we are seeing a wave of inexpensive, high quality and high performance devices exemplified by Nexus 4 and Nexus 7. Who has imagined that a quality tablet could be delivered for 200$. Apple had its way selling tablets starting from 500$ and is still going reasonably strong. Google again set precedent by introducing a superphone for 349$. Apple had to shed its weight and introduced a smaller Apple Ipad Mini for 329$. The Nexus devices have just pulled down the android tablet prices to at least 100$ lower than their price points prior to 'Nexusization'.
I just came across another device that is making waves in the tech world. It is the Kogan Agora. Apart from seemingly scary sounding name (Agoras in India are scary people who feed on the dead and practice weird witchcraft), this is a better than mid-range android phone with a 5 inch screen, dual core Cortex A9 processor, 512mb RAM and a thin form factor for 149$. Get ready for more!!!

But Apple will dilute its brand value by producing a cheaper iPhone. As of date iPhone stands for state of the art equipment and software and to produce a cheaper iPhone they will need to compromise on the hardware and refinement at the least which will ultimately weaken their market image.

@Praveen, I doubt if Apple is going to dilute its brand value. Apple software is remarkably optimized to its hardware that they make a dual core 1Ghz processor powered iPhone 5 perform equally, if not faster than a 1.5Ghz quad-core processor powered android phone. Essentially, they are using last gen hardware (obviously cheaper) to achieve current gen performance. Current apple devices are being sold at a hefty premium...which they are probably getting ready to compromise to regain market share.

I heard that apple is making plastic bottom instead of expensive aluminium and that enables to sell the phone cheaper

Thats the same thing we were talking about. As long as Apple can make a cheaper iPhone which only compromises on the aesthetics of the device but not on the user experience they will do good. If they compromise on the spec, then the outcome could be disastrous for their brand image.
